Viola Class

Hello everyone!

My name is Miss Bough and I’m so excited to be teaching in Viola class this year.

I will be making sure children in Viola class feel safe, happy and eager to learn, with plenty of opportunities to ask questions, talk about their learning with peers and explore new ideas. This includes doing practical activities in maths and creative tasks in English to build on and extend their learning. I love reading and storytelling, and in Year 1 we have so many lovely stories to enjoy. Reading and writing are such important elements of our learning in Year 1 and I look forward to fostering a love of both in Viola class.

In my spare time, I enjoy being in the outdoors with my friends, going on bike rides, and exploring Bristol.

I’m really looking forward to getting to know you all and supporting your children during this exciting year. Have a fantastic summer break and see you in September!

Our Learning in Viola Class

Subject Areas	During this academic year, we will be learning...
Maths	We teach maths daily and will be covering a range of topics. Alongside our maths lessons, we also teach short Number Sense lessons each day. Term 1: Number and Place Value (numbers to 20), Measurement, and Addition and Subtraction (within 10) Term 2: Addition and Subtraction (number bonds to 20), Geometry, and Measurement Term 3:Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction, Number and Place Value (counting 0–50), Geometry and Money Term 4: Addition and Subtraction (within 20), Measurement (time), Number and Place Value , Multiplication Term 5: Addition and Subtraction (within 20), Fractions, and Fractions, Position and Direction Term 6: Multiplication and Division, Number and Place Value, Addition and Subtraction and Multiplication and Division (revisit)
English	In our writing lessons we will be focused on sentence composition for terms 1-3 but we will be using a range of books to support and inspire our writing this year. In Term 1 and 2, these will be Beegu, Where the Wild things are, The Storm Whale and Aesop's Fables In Term 3, these will be The Tales of Peter Rabbit, Look Up, And Tango makes three, Chocolate cake Term 4: We will be writing setting descriptions and then following up with some instructional writing. In the final two terms we will be reading Here we are, The Lion Inside, There's a Rangtan in my bedroom and The Proudest Blue. These will again be used to support our writing. Term 5: We will be begin writing stories with familiar settings before moving onto recounting from a personal experience. Term 6: We will finish the year with some informal letter writing and some final story writing before the year ends.
Science	Term 1: Seasonal Changes and Weather Plants, Including Trees Term 2: Animals, Including humans Term 3: Everyday Materials Term 4: Revisit Animals Including Humans Term 5: Revisit Plants Term 6: Second Revisit Plants and Animals, Including humans

History	Term 1 and 2: Study changes in living memory Term 3 and 4: Study the lives of significant individuals – We will be exploring Mary Anning and Sir David Attenborough Term 5 and 6: More lives of significant people - We will be exploring Neil Armstrong, Mae Jemison, Bernard Harris Jr and Tim Peake.
Religion and World Views	In Religion and World Views we will be answering a different question each term. Term 1: How did the world begin? Term 2: What do some people believe God looks like? Term 3: What is God's job? Term 4: Why should we care for the world? Term 5: How do we know that new babies are special? Term 6: Why should we care for others?
PSHE	We teach PSHE weekly in school and cover a range of topics that provide children with the skills and understanding to support themselves in a range of areas. Term 1: My Healthy self Term 2: Connecting with others Term 3: The online world Term 4: Citizenship Term 5: Health protection Term 6: Staying safe

Art	We will be using a range famous artworks to inspire our own creations. Term 1: Drawing (The Rhinoceros (1515) by Albrecht Durer). Painting (Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow (1930) by Piet Mondrian). Term 2: Painting (Composition II in Red, Blue and Yellow (1930) by Piet Mondrian). Term 3 and 4: We will have two terms looking at a creative response to some of the art we will be looking at. Term 5: Textiles (The Horse, the Rider and the Clown by Henri Matisse). Term 6: 3D block (Big Fish (1999) by John Kindness
Design and Technology	We will be having DT days each term with a different focus on skills and the products we will create. Term 1:Mechanisms Term 2:Structures Term 3:Food and Nutrition Term 4:Understanding Materials Term 5:Textiles Term 6:Food and Nutrition

Music	We will have music lessons with Mr Rees. In terms 1 and 2 we will be singing together and getting ready for our Christmas performances. In Terms 3 and 4 we will be composing and creating music exploring rhythm and pulse. In Terms 5 and 6 we will be creating some melodic responses and singing for performances.
Enrichment	We have a number of enrichment activities happening this year which we are all excited about.
Assessment	Year 1 will have Phonics Assessments during week beginning Monday 14th June 2027.

Weekly timetable

PE Days

PE in Year 1 is on Tuesday and Thursday. Please make sure that you wear a PE kit to school on these days. Our PE kit is plain black shorts; leggings or joggers; plain white or school PE t-shirt; school jumper.

Homework

Please read at home every day if possible. Ask lots of questions while reading to support your child's comprehension as well as their decoding skills. Reading books will be changed on Mondays, but children can change their book on any day if needed. We ask that children read each book at least three times to help build fluency and confidence.

The phonics graphemes we have been learning can be found in your child's reading record and at the front of their phonics reading books. Please practise these regularly at home by saying the sounds and recognising the graphemes. Revisiting these often will help your child become a more confident and fluent reader.

For maths practice, we encourage regular use of Numbots (logins and instructions will be sent home) alongside practising key skills every day, such as reading and writing numbers, telling the time on an analogue clock, recognising coins and measuring using different units.

Useful Information

Please ensure your child brings a named water bottle to school each day, along with a spare change of clothes (including underwear and socks) in a named bag.

Please make sure all school uniform, PE kit, coats and lunch boxes are clearly labelled with your child's name and class. This helps us return lost items quickly.

Please also ensure your child arrives at school with the correct clothing for the weather. As we spend lots of time learning outdoors, a waterproof coat is essential on wet days, and a sun hat and sun cream (applied before school) are recommended during warmer weather.

If your child has any changes to their collection arrangements or there is anything you feel we should know, please let a member of the Year 1 team or the school office know as soon as possible.
