Bluebell Class

Hi,

My name is Mrs Carnes, and I am really excited to be the Year 2 Class Teacher this year!

Year 2 is a great year where we learn lots of interesting things. We explore plants and animals in Science; we discover new artists and create our own 3D models in Art lessons, and in English we learn how to write invitations and describe characters when we write amazing stories together.

I like a calm, kind and curious classroom, and my main aim as a teacher is to encourage children to be creative and confident learners.

I am really looking forward to getting to know Bluebell Class's chidlren and their families this year - my door is always open for you to come and see me to chat about your child and ensure this year is fabulous for all of us!

Subject Areas	During this academic year, we will be leering...
Maths	In maths, we continue to use Number Sense lessons to develop our number fluency skills. We also cover a range of topics throughout the year. Term 1: Place value and Addition and subtraction Term 2: Addition and subtraction (continued) and Shape Term 3: Money and Multiplication and division Term 4: Length and height and Mass, capacity and temperature Term 5: Fractions and Time Term 6: Statistics and Position and direction
English	In our writing lessons we will be using a range of books to support and inspire us all with our writing. In term 1, we will be doing a strong start unit which is focused on the basics. Children will be writing character descriptions and poems with a focus on developing vocabulary. In term 2, we will be writing a simple narrative before writing some formal invitations and stories from other cultures. In term 3, children will again explore some poetry. They will then be writing some non-chronological reports. In term 4, we will be recounting a personal experience along with writing another narrative. In term 5, we will be revisiting non-chronological reports and exploring character descriptions too. In term 6, we will finish the year with stories from other cultures and a final piece of poetry.

Religion and World Views	In Religion and World Views we will be answering a different question each term. Term 1: Why do we need to give thanks? Term 2: Why is light important to people? Term 3: How do we know some people feel a special connection to a god? Term 4: What is a prophet? Term 5: How do some people talk to God? Term 6: Where do some people talk to God?
PSHE	We teach PSHE weekly in school and cover a range of topics that provide children with the skills and understanding to support themselves in a range of areas. Term 1: My Healthy self Term 2: Connecting with others Term 3: The online world Term 4: Citizenship Term 5: Growing up Term 6: Staying safe

Art	We will be using a range famous artworks to inspire our own creations. Term 1: Drawing - Beth Krommes Term 2: Painting - Kandinsky Term 3: Printmaking - William Morris Term 4: Textiles and collage - Katie Vernon Term 5: 3D - John Kindness/Danny Eastwood Term 6: Creative Response
Design Technology	We will be having DT days each term with a different focus on skills and the products we will create. Term 1: Mechanisms Term 2: Structures Term 3: Food and Nutrition Term 4: Understanding Materials Term 5: Textiles Term 6: Food and Nutrition
Music	We will have music lessons with Mr Rees. Term 1: Start with Singing: Changing tempo and dynamics in our songs Term 2: Singing Together: How singing helps us work together Winter Sing workshop & performance Term 3: Compose and Create: Recording our musical ideas using a graphic score Term 4: Music and Movement: Using symbols to represent pitch Term 5: Compose and Create: Improvising with four notes Term 6: Singing for Performance: Adding a simple second part

Enrichment	We have a number of enrichment activities happening this year which we are all excited about.
Assessment	Year 2 will have Phonics Assessments during week beginning Monday 14th June 2027. Please do not take holiday during this period.

Weekly timetable

PE Days

PE in Year 2 is on Monday and Wednesday. Please make sure that you wear a PE kit to school on these days. Our PE kit is plain black shorts; leggings or joggers; plain white or school PE t-shirt; school jumper.

Homework

Please read daily at home as much as possible. Ask lots of questions during this time to support their comprehension as well as their decoding skills. Children will be taught to change their own reading books and reminded to do so. We ask for them to read these books at least 3 times. Please talk to your child’s class teacher if your child needs extra support with changing their book.

For maths practise, regular use of Numbots (you will receive logins and instructions for this) alongside practising every day key skills like, reading and writing numbers, telling the time on an analogue clock, recognising coins and measuring in different units.

Please ensure your child brings a water bottle to school each day.
